Mrs. Adeyemi still remembers the night she almost didn’t notice.
Her son had always been the loud one, the one who filled the house with laughter, football chants, and off-key singing in the shower. So when he grew quiet, she told herself it was just a phase. Exams, maybe. Or a girl. He was tired more often. He stopped eating with the family. His friends changed. His eyes changed.
It wasn’t until she found the empty wraps hidden in his school bag that she understood: the phase had a name, and it had been growing right under her roof.
She was one of the lucky ones. She caught it early enough to get help.
Not every family does.
At Freedom Foundation, our rehabilitation programme has shown us this story too many times: the quiet withdrawal, the changed friend group, the excuses that don’t quite add up. By the time many families reach us, addiction has already taken root. And that’s exactly what we’re working to change.
Substance abuse rarely announces itself. It creeps in through small, easy-to-miss shifts — and those first signs are often the last chance to act before addiction takes hold.

That’s why we created our FREE Early Detection & Intervention Resource Guide — a practical tool for parents, teachers, caregivers, faith leaders, and communities to recognize the warning signs early, respond with confidence, and connect someone to help before it’s too late.
Mrs. Adeyemi got a second chance. With the right knowledge, so can you.
Read it. Share it. Use it.
Together, let’s Catch it Early, Save a Life.
