Genesis House, a programme of the Freedom Foundation, has joined the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the United Nations Organization for Migration (IOM) on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons to walk for awareness in Ikeja, Lagos.
The event brought together government agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders committed to raising awareness about human trafficking and strengthening collective efforts to prevent it. The awareness walk began at Ikeja GRA, continued through Ikeja Underbridge to Computer Village, before returning to the starting point. Along the route, participants engaged members of the public with important information about human trafficking, encouraging people to stay informed, vigilant, and proactive in protecting themselves and others.
During the outreach, participants educated the public on how traffickers often exploit people’s hopes and vulnerabilities through false promises of employment, education, or better opportunities. They also highlighted the realities many victims face, including exploitation, abuse, forced labour, and the loss of their freedom. To ensure the message reached as many people as possible, awareness talks were delivered in a few widely spoken local languages in addition to English.
A key message throughout the campaign was the importance of safe and informed migration. Members of the public were encouraged to verify travel documents, confirm the legitimacy of recruiters or sponsors, understand the purpose of their journey, and know their destination before travelling. These simple precautions can help individuals avoid falling victim to traffickers.

We recognize that preventing human trafficking begins with equipping people with the knowledge to identify risks, make informed decisions, and seek help when necessary. By working alongside partners such as NAPTIP and other stakeholders, we continue to support efforts aimed at creating safer communities and reducing the vulnerability of individuals to exploitation.
As the world marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Genesis House reaffirms its commitment to promoting awareness, supporting prevention initiatives, and standing with all those working to end human trafficking.
