Virtual Conference set to Mark International Day Against Drug Abuse/Illicit Trafficking

Substance abuse is not just an individual problem — it deeply affects families, schools, and communities. The theme Unmasking Addiction highlights the need to look beyond the surface of drug use and focus on the systems that can prevent, detect early, and support recovery. This approach aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well‑being) and UNODC’s mandate to promote health, justice, and resilient communities.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), out of every 100 Nigerians aged 15–64, about 14 people have used psychoactive substances — things like drugs that affect mood or behavior. That’s roughly 14.3 million people across the country, which is much higher than the global average. Among them, more than 3 million Nigerians are struggling with drug use disorders — meaning they are dependent or addicted and need help.

In commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Freedom Foundation will convene a virtual conference focused on prevention, family engagement, early intervention, and recovery support systems. This conference will serve as a platform for multi-sectoral dialogue, evidence sharing, and collaborative action aimed at strengthening community-based responses to substance abuse. At this preliminary stage, it will focus on;

  • Increasing awareness and early detection of substance abuse in individuals, families, and communities
  • Equip parents, caregivers, and stakeholders with practical prevention and engagement strategies
  • Promote conversations around early intervention, rehabilitation, and recovery support
  • Encourage youth-focused advocacy and prevention initiatives
  • Strengthen collaboration among stakeholders working within mental health, rehabilitation, youth development, and community support

This convening, therefore, represents a timely and critical response to an evolving public health crisis, reinforcing the need for coordinated prevention, strengthened family systems, and expanded access to sustainable recovery support in Nigeria. It will promote prevention-focused conversations, strengthen family and community engagement, and advance collaborative approaches towards addressing substance abuse through awareness, early intervention, and recovery support.
