We recognise that the quality of our impact is closely connected to the capacity of the people delivering the work. Our programmes support individuals and communities facing complex social challenges, and this requires staff who are equipped with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to respond effectively.
It was against this backdrop that Freedom Foundation held its Q3 Staff Capacity Development Training from September 14–16, 2026, a three-day learning experience designed to strengthen practical skills across project management & implementation, financial accountability, communication, grant writing, First Aid, crisis response, and basic psychological and safety support.
Strengthening the Skills Behind the Work
The training brought together different areas of organisational practice that directly influence how we plan, deliver, monitor and communicate our work.
The first day focused on Project Management and Grant Writing. Staff explored organisational goals and targets, effective project delivery, planning, deliverables, timelines, risk management, monitoring and reporting. The grant writing session also covered proposal structure, budgeting basics and storytelling for funders.
These skills are important to ensuring that good ideas translate into well-planned projects with clear objectives, responsible resource use and measurable outcomes. Strong project management also helps teams anticipate challenges, monitor progress and remain accountable to the people and communities we serve.

Accountability and Communication: Everyone Plays a Role
The second day emphasized financial management, accountability and communication.
Staff were taken through budgeting, retirement and compliance processes, reinforcing the importance of responsible financial management in delivering sustainable programmes.
The training also examined communication as a responsibility of every staff member, built around the principle that “Every interaction. Every post. Every word counts.”
For an organisation whose work involves engaging beneficiaries, partners, donors, stakeholders and the wider public, communication extends beyond the Communications team. Every interaction contributes to how our work is understood and experienced. Strengthening this awareness helps us communicate with greater clarity, consistency and responsibility.

Preparing Staff for Crisis and Resident Support
For Freedom Foundation’s frontline teams, particularly those working directly with residents and beneficiaries, responding appropriately to difficult situations is an essential part of the work. The third day therefore focused on Basic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), crisis intervention, de-escalation, first aid and basic life support.
Staff were introduced to core CBT concepts, thought-reframing techniques and ways of applying basic CBT principles in resident support. They also participated in a practical exercise involving a sample resident scenario.
The session continued with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, followed by hands-on demonstrations and practice in first aid and basic life support.
These sessions provide staff with practical tools for responding more appropriately and confidently when psychological, behavioural or medical situations arise within our programmes.
From Learning to Application
The training was designed not only to share information, but to encourage practical application. Staff engaged in team-building activities, guided exercises, role plays and a budget and expense-report review that required teams to identify documentation gaps.
This practical approach is particularly important because capacity development is most valuable when learning translates into everyday practice.
The impact of the training will therefore extend beyond the three days. Staff return to their respective roles with strengthened skills that can support better project execution, improved accountability, clearer communication, more effective resource mobilisation and appropriate responses to crisis and safety situations.

Building a Stronger Organisation for Greater Impact
At Freedom Foundation Nigeria, investing in our staff is part of investing in the people and communities we serve. As our programmes continue to address issues including addiction, sexual exploitation, human trafficking and access to quality education, the capacity of our team remains central to the quality of the support we provide.
The Q3 Staff Capacity Development Training was an opportunity to pause, learn, reflect and strengthen our practice. More importantly, it reinforced a simple principle: when we strengthen our people, we strengthen the work, and ultimately, the lives we touch.
The three days concluded with a training evaluation and closing session, marking the end of the Q3 capacity development programme and another step towards strengthening Freedom Foundation’s people, programmes and impact.
